Verreaux's eagle owl (Bubo lacteus), also known as giant or milky eagle owl. Whilst not endangered, it is fairly rare. It is also the largest of the owls on the African continent. It eats medium-sized mammals including monkeys, hedgehogs, hyraxes, larger birds, reptiles, frogs, invertebrates, fish and even carrion. The clip shows an adult owl vocalising in thermoregulating posture. Filmed seeking shade under a Camelthorn tree in summer, in the Auob riverbed, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, Southern Africa. |
