White rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) mother and calf. The calf is scratching itself on a small tree. These are southern white rhinos (C. simum simum), whose natural range is the grasslands of southern Africa. These individuals have been relocated to the Nairobi National Park in Kenya, to better protect them from poachers. The southern white rhino is the most abundant rhino species, but it is classified as Near Threatened. The main danger is poaching, as its horns fetch a high price for use in traditional Asian medicines. |
