Animation of podocytes covering a glomerulus in the kidney. The podocytes (white) have a large body and then divide into smaller extensions (pedicels) that form an interlocking network. The glomerulus within contains tightly-coiled capillaries. As blood passes through each glomerulus, water and metabolic wastes are filtered through the tiny slits between the pedicels, removing water and sugar from the blood. The podocytes are enclosed by a surrounding Bowman's capsule, which collects the liquid and drains it into a tubule, from where it is processed to become urine. |
