Aerial drone footage of The Needles Lighthouse and sea stacks, at the Isle of Wight, UK. The Lighthouse warns shipping of the rocks and the associated shallow shoals called The Shingles. The Needles are a chain of stacks formed by the erosion of a chalk headland. The chalk was formed in the Cretaceous period, and is made up of the shells of tiny marine plankton, laid down at the bottom of the sea. The chalk beds were uplifted and deformed during the Alpine Orogeny, some 30-20 million years ago. During this process the horizontal beds were rotated so that they were nearly vertical, which accounts for the dramatic steep cliffs of the stacks and the coastal cliffs. | |
