Aerial drone footage of the cliffs at Alum Bay, on the Isle of Wight, UK. These multicoloured cliffs are formed from an exposed series of sedimentary rock layers, which were uplifted and rotated during the Alpine Orogeny, some 30-20 million years ago. The various layers below include white chalk from the Cretaceous period, and sands and clays from the Palaeocene and Eocene epochs. The colours of the sandstones come from oxidation of various iron compounds. | |
