Zoom into the mouthparts of a salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis), coloured SEM. This is a parasite of salmon, which attaches to their skin using its grasping legs (purple). Once attached, it feeds on blood, skin and mucus, biting with its sharp teeth (grey). In the wild, infestation levels are low and do not usually pose a serious risk to the host fish. Salmon lice have become a serious problem in farmed salmon, though, where the high local densities of fish allow the rapid growth of louse populations, to levels that can injure or kill the fish. This clip is made up of a series of 10 scanning electron microscope (SEM) images taken at successively greater magnifications. | |
