Sea cucumber with extruded organs. Sea cucumbers can forcibly extrude their internal organs as a defensive measure to deter predators. The organs include parts of the gut and respiratory system, and are released through a tear in the anus. The organs contain toxins that deter predators. The animal regenerates the organs over several weeks. Sea cucumbers are bottom-dwelling scavengers related to starfish. Filmed off the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. | |
