Zebra shark (Stegostoma fasciatum) lying on a sandy seabed. It has a remora fish on its head and is being watched by a diver. This is a nocturnal shark, which rests on the seabed by day and actively hunts molluscs, crustaceans and small fish by night. It can reach a length of some 2.5 metres. It is a docile shark and is easily approached. It is found in the tropical Indo-Pacific region, from eastern South Africa to southern Japan and northern Australia. It inhabits shallow reefs and sandy regions, not deeper than around 60 metres, although it will cross deep water to find new hunting grounds. Filmed on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. |
