Paramecium caudatum cells out of a culture showing the behavior of the individuals when stained yeast is applied to the culture medium under the coverglass. Paramecium is a filter feeder and mainly feeds on bacteria. Paramecium is not able to make a food selection, so all kind of particles were ingested and packed into food vacuoles, in this case stained yeast cells. The yeast was stained with Congo red, a pH indicator to show the pH inside the food vacuoles during the digestion period. Several research articles describe the different stages of food vacuoles during the digestion process. Within 5 min of formation, the pH within the vacuole dropped from approximately 7 to 3, indicated by a change of color of Congo-red from red to blue. This clip was taken immediately after the application of the yeast suspension, showing only red food vacuoles. Microscopic contrast technique: Differential interference contrast..
