Light microscope footage of the pleurostomatid ciliate Loxophyllum meleagris. This huge ciliate is about 400 micrometres long and easily recognizable by the moniliform macronuleus and the curious toxicyst warts on the right side of the animal. Loxophyllum is a predatory ciliate, majestically gliding on the surface of benthic habitats. This sample was taken from a small brook. Microscopic contrast technique: Differential interference contrast. Captured field width: 0.4mm | |
