Timelapse of the night sky over the Paranal Observatory, Cerro Paranal, Chile. The clips starts with the four 8 metre telescopes of the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (VLT). We then see the VLT's 1.8 metre axillary telescopes. Night falls and the band of dust and stars that is our galaxy, the Milky Way, seen from the inside is seen. It sets over the horizon and green and red airglow are seen. This atmospheric phenomenon is the natural glow of the Earth's upper atmosphere, made by the molecules excited by the solar radiation and particles. Orion is then seen rising over the auxiliary telescopes. The clip finishes by zooming in to the Carina nebula. | |
