Box jellyfish (Cubozoa) caught by a large sea anemone (Actiniaria). It is trying to swim away but has been caught by a tentacle and dragged in. Both of these animals are cnidarians, and are armed with stinging tentacles used to incapacitate prey. Box jellyfish are relatives of true jellyfish, but unlike true jellyfish they have complex eyes and are active swimmers, avoiding obstacles and chasing after prey. Sea anemones are sessile, resting on rocks and corals and catching animals that drift too close, such as this luckless box jellyfish. Filmed in the Gulf of Thailand, near Koh Pha Ngan Island. | |
