Globular springtails (Sminthurides aquaticus) courting. The male (top) has clasping antennae, which he uses to grab the antennae of females. This small springtail displays pronounced sexual dimorphism: the females are as much as twice the size of the males. Springtails (Collembolans) are omnivorous, free-living organisms that prefer moist conditions. They have six legs and are related to the insects, although their lineage is thought to have diverged from the insect line some 400 million years ago. Males may reach a length of 0.5 millimetres, females 1mm. These springtails were found in west Wales, UK. | |
