Light microscope footage of Mallomonas sp. algae. Mallomonas (from the Greek mallos , wool and monas , unit) is a single-celled flagellate with usually one emergent flagellum. The cell membrane is covered with overlapping silica scales, some of the scales with long silica bristles. The cells contain one single, deeply divided plastid. Mallomonas is associated with taste and odor problems with drinking water. Fossil scales similar to those of modern Mallomonas cells have been found in middle Eocene deposits (about 47 million years of age) indicating that the synurophyceans are at least that old. Microscopic contrast method used: differential interference contrast. Captured field width: 0.17mm. Sample from an algae culture of the culture collection of algae at the university of Cologne, CCAC. | |
