MODEL RELEASED. Fabrication of 5D nanostructured glass data disc. Footage of optoelectronics researcher Peter Kazansky (born 1956) filming the fabrication of a 5D data storage disc. The round quartz glass disc (example seen in clip K006/4826) is being modified by an ultrafast (femtosecond) laser to produce patterned layers of nanostructured dots and gratings. The 3D position of the dots, as well as the size and orientation, results in five dimensions of information encoding. The optical and thermal stability of the quartz means that the digital data recorded by this method will last for over 13 billion years. Each disc has a capacity of 360 terabytes. The technology is known as 'Superman memory crystal'. Footage filmed in 2016 at the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton, UK.
