Ciliated protozoan (Tetrahymena thermophila), animated coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Tetrahymena thermophila is a fresh water ciliate, having numerous fine cilia in rows on its cell surface. The buccal cavity can be seen at the anterior end of the cell. Dense cilia surrounding the cavity opening beat in a designated direction bringing in food particles such as bacteria. This ciliate has been used in biotechnology research to study if useful biologically active chemicals, such as enzymes, polyunsaturated fatty acids and antibiotics can be produced. T. thermophila has had its genome sequenced. | |
