M78 nebula. Cross-fade rostrum footage of images of the M78 nebula obtained in first visible and then infrared light. In the infrared the dusty parts of the nebula are more transparent and many new features appear. In addition, red jets of material from very young stars can be seen prominently. The visible data was obtained by the Wide Field Imager (WFI) camera on the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope. The infrared data was from the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA). M78 is a reflection nebula located around 1600 light years distant, in the constellation of Orion. Image published in 2016. | |
