Global vegetation levels, 2015-2016. Animation of a global map showing vegetation levels in 2015 and 2016. A quarter of the Earth's surface is covered in vegetation. The data shown here was obtained from the NASA/NOAA Suomi NPP satellite, showing subtle differences in greenness using the Visible-Infrared Imager/Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument. The darkest green areas are the lushest in vegetation and absorb the most visible sunlight, while the pale colours are sparse in vegetation cover either due to snow, drought, rock, or urban areas. VIIRS detects changes in the reflection of visible light, producing images that measure changes to vegetation over time. The Suomi NPP (National Polar-orbiting Partnership) satellite was launched in 2011. | |
