The Sun compared to larger stars. The Sun (Sol) is compared with the white star Sirius (Alpha Canis Majoris), which is 1.7 times its size, then orange giant Arcturus (Alpha Bootis), 26 times the Sun's size. The lines indicate the orbits of the planets in the solar system. Red giant Aldebaran (Alpha Tauri) is 44 times the Sun's size, blue supergiant Rigel (Beta Orionis), 78 times, red supergiant Betelgeuse (Alpha Orionis), some 1180 times the Sun's diameter, which would stretch almost to the orbit of Jupiter. UY Scuti, the largest star known as of 2016 is a red supergiant thought to have a diameter more than 1700 times that of the Sun. | |
