Close-up of the head of a springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) as it feeds on a young camelthorn tree. The springbok, or springbuck, is a medium-sized gazelle and the national animal of South Africa. It is a selective feeder which usually grazes on new shoots during the wet season, and browses on shrubs in the drier season, when soft grasses are less in abundance. Springbok obtain their water needs from the food they eat, and are able to survive without drinking water for long periods. Photographed in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park, South Africa. | |
