Milky Way, 360-degree scan. Scan across a composite panorama of the Milky Way. Our galaxy is a flat spiral disk and our solar system is located in an outer area, in one of its spiral arms. The 360-degree mosaic shows our galaxy's plane all the way around us. The composite was assembled from more than 2 million infrared images obtained over 10 years by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, launched in 2003. This mosaic comes primarily from the GLIMPSE360 project (Galactic Legacy Infrared Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire). | |
