Transit of Mercury. Time-lapse footage from the Solar Dynamics Observatory of the planet Mercury passing in front of the Sun, on 9th May 2016. Such an event is called a transit. During a transit, Mercury is silhouetted against the Sun, which is seen at many different wavelengths in this clip. Although Mercury passes between Earth and the Sun every 116 days on average, there is not a transit each time as Mercury's orbital plane is at an angle of seven degrees to Earth's, so it usually passes above or below the Sun as seen from Earth. Instead there are 13 or 14 each century, in early May or mid-November, where the orbital planes of the planets intersect. | |
