Group of army ants (Eciton hamatum) on tree bark. Some of the workers are carrying their eggs (white) while being guarded by the larger soldiers. Army ants form huge colonies of individuals that forage for prey as a group, and inhabit only temporary nests or bivouacs, rather than the permanent nests of most other ants. E. hamatum is largely arboreal, hunting mainly other ants and wasps. Filmed in the Ecuadorian Amazon. | |
