| Animation of a still-molten planet-moon system, with a dusty debris ring and numerous small rocky bodies in orbit. Planets are thought to form from the accretion of smaller rocky bodies. Along with heat from the radioactive decay of its component rocks, this provides enough energy to keep the planet molten early in its life. Larger collisions, such as the one thought to have formed Earth's Moon, can also result in widespread melting and mixing. The resulting ejected debris may form an equatorial ring, as seen here. | |
