Electric candle. This apparatus is based on the lamps designed by the French inventor Emile Reynier and the English engineer Richard Werdermann. It has a thin rod or wick of carbon that is raised by a float (bottom) as it is burned up. Electrical wires running up the 'candle' provide the power to keep the carbon rod burning, producing an illuminating flame. Artwork from the seventh volume (first period of 1891) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
