Rotifer. Light microscope footage of the head of a Brachionus sp. freshwater rotifer as it feeds. Rotifers are multicellular animals. They are divided into three parts; the head, trunk and foot. At the head end the protruding crown-shaped corona possesses beating hair-like cilia which create a current that sweeps food, such as unicellular green algae, into the mouth. Towards the end of the clip, the organism excretes waste from its anus. This species is found in freshwater, brackish (slightly salty) and alkaline waters. Filmed with differential interference contrast illumination. | |
