Animation of the Gulf Stream ocean current in the North Atlantic Ocean. This clip shows water temperature ranging from warmest (bright pink) through yellow and and green to blue (coolest). The Gulf Stream originated when westward-moving water from the tropical Atlantic arrives in the Caribbean Sea. It enters the Gulf of Mexico and exits between Cuba and Florida, USA. The warm current travels up the East Coast of the USA and heads across the Atlantic from Newfoundland, Canada. The water cools at it makes the journey, but is still significantly warmer when it arrives at Ireland and Great Britain than the waters at the same latitude in the western Atlantic, keeping western Europe correspondingly warmer. This animation is based on satellite data. | |
