NERVA nuclear rocket research. 1968 footage showing construction of an experimental reactor and prototype nuclear thermal rocket during the NERVA (Nuclear Engine for Rocket Vehicle Application) project. NERVA was a U.S. nuclear thermal rocket engine development programme that ran from 1952 to 1972 at Los Alamos, New Mexico. In 1968 the project successfully demonstrated that nuclear thermal rocket engines were feasible propulsion systems for space missions, and met the requirements for a human mission to Mars. However, the programme was cancelled due to budget constraints. | |
