Gonorrhoea diagnostic technique. Animation of one of the techniques used by physicians to obtain a sample of the fluid produced in a case of gonorrhoea. This is a male patient's genitals seen in sectioned view from the side. The penis is being massaged to extract a sample. After sampling, the fluid will be cultured to identify the bacteria and diagnose the disease. Gonorrhoea is a venereal (sexually-transmitted) disease caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Initial infection is of the urethra, causing a discharge of yellow fluid, but other areas can also be affected. It readily spreads to surrounding tissues. Further spread to the blood or brain may be fatal. Treatment is with antibiotic drugs. This clip is from an educational film produced by the US Public Health Service in around 1943. | |
