Gonorrhoea infection sites. Animation of the regions of the male anatomy most commonly affected in a case of gonorrhoea. This is a male patient's pelvic area seen in sectioned view from the side. The infection sites are highlighted in red: the urethra, the prostate, the bulbourethral gland (Cowper's gland) and the seminal vesicles. Gonorrhoea is a venereal (sexually-transmitted) disease caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Infection causes a discharge of yellow fluid. It readily spreads to surrounding tissues. Further spread to the blood or brain may be fatal. Treatment is with antibiotic drugs. This clip is from an educational film produced by the US Public Health Service in around 1943. | |
