Protein sulphur bond formation. Animation showing the formation of a covalent bond between two sulphur atoms forming part of an alpha helix in a protein. The atoms are colour-coded here: carbon (grey), hydrogen (white), oxygen (red), nitrogen (blue) and sulphur (yellow). The alpha helix (part of the protein secondary structure) is shown schematically in blue. During the animation, the helix folds in on itself and the animation zooms in to show the formation of a sulphur-sulphur bond (orange glow). As this is a covalent bond, it can be considered part of the primary structure. As the sulphur bridges affect how the protein folds, it is more usually considered part of the tertiary structure. | |
