New Horizons in flight. Animation of the New Horizons space probe in flight towards the Kuiper belt. New Horizons is an interplanetary space probe that was launched in January 2006, and arrived at dwarf planet Pluto in July 2015, a journey of around 6 billion kilometres. It is the fastest object ever launched from Earth. After mapping Pluto and its moons, New Horizons has continued deeper into the Kuiper belt to study objects it encounters there. The probe is projected to arrive at its next destination, classical Kuiper belt object 2014 MU69, in early 2019. | |
