New Horizons at 2014 MU69. Animation of the New Horizons space probe as it passes classical Kuiper belt object 2014 MU69. New Horizons is an interplanetary space probe that was launched in January 2006, and arrived at dwarf planet Pluto in July 2015. After passing Pluto, New Horizons has continued deeper into the Kuiper belt, to study objects it encounters there, such as 2014 MU69. 2014 MU69 was identified by the Hubble Space Telescope in 2014. It is estimated to have a diameter of between 30 and 45 kilometres, with an orbital period of 293 years. New Horizons is projected to pass it in early 2019. | |
