HeLa cells in culture. Light microscopy footage of the movement, division and death of HeLa cervical cancer cells. HeLa cells are a continuously cultured cell line of human cancer cells. They are immortal, in that they can divide an unlimited number of times. However, they are also poorly differentiated and lack some of the characteristics of normal cells. HeLa cells are widely used in biological and medical research. They all originate from a sample taken in 1951 from cervical cancer patient Henrietta Lacks, after whom they are named. | |
