Mercury's orbit. Animation of the planet Mercury orbiting the Sun. Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun, orbiting in around 88 Earth days. It has the largest orbital eccentricity of the solar system's eight planets. At aphelion (left), Mercury is about 1.5 times as far from the Sun as it is at perihelion (right), its closest approach to the Sun. The Mercury-Sun distance at perihelion is just over 46 million kilometres. At aphelion, the distance is just over 69.8 million kilometres. The size of the Sun and Mercury are not to scale in this animation. | |
