Changing convex lens curvature. Animation of the effect on light rays of changing curvature in a convex lens (right). Convex lenses converge incoming light rays. Here, the lens starts off relatively thin and expands to a spherical shape before returning to its original state. The effect on the light passing through the lens is shown by an array of parallel translucent screens. The smaller the light spot on a screen, the more the light beam has converged. As the lens curvature increases (becomes more rounded) the rays are bent (refracted) more and the brightest spot gets closer to the lens. This represents the shortening of the focal length as the curvature of the lens increases. | |
