Crocodile fossil discovery. Animation of the site of the discovery of a crocodile fossil in an arid badlands area. Tools used to make the discovery include a geologist's hammer, used to break rocks to expose fossils, and a brush used for delicate excavation work. Fossilisation occurs as rocks form around objects that have been buried in mud or ash. As the rock forms, the shape and anatomy of the buried object is preserved. Badlands are dry terrain consisting of soft sedimentary rocks and clay-rich soils. They are often rich in fossils. Crocodilians evolved 83.5 million years ago in the Late Cretaceous, with true crocodiles emerging during the Eocene epoch, about 55 million years ago. | |
