Fertilisation and blastocyst formation. Animation of the process of fertilisation (conception) occurring in an oviduct (Fallopian tube), and the subsequent development up to the blastocyst stage. A mature ovum (female sex cell) is shown with several spermatozoa (male sex cells), one of which penetrates the outer layer and successfully fertilises the ovum. The resulting zygote then undergoes successive cycles of cell division as it moves up the oviduct and enters the uterus (womb). By the end of the animation, it has reached the blastocyst stage, with an inner cell mass present that will form the embryo.
