Standing wave addition. Animation showing how standing waves can be combined. Two standing waves (red and green) combine to produce the third wave (pink). This is an important principle in interferometry where the addition or subtraction of waves results in constructive or destructive interference. These waves are called standing waves because they do not progress along the strip. Instead they are produced by the interference of equal but opposite waves travelling along the strip in opposite directions. | |
