Standing wave harmonics. Animation showing how an oscillating strip or string can vibrate at different frequencies called harmonics. The simplest and lowest frequency (red, bottom) is called the fundamental frequency. The strips, which remain fixed at either end, can oscillate with higher frequencies (the next nine harmonics are shown here). These waves are called standing waves because they do not progress along the strip. Instead they are produced by the interference of equal but opposite waves travelling along the strip in opposite directions. | |
