Light microscope footage of a red stentor (Stentor amethystinus) ciliate protozoan. This freshwater protozoan feeds mainly on bacteria, which it filters through membranelles (beating) in its primitive mouth, known as a buccal cavity. The small bodies inside the protozoan are individual Zoochlorella sp. algae, which have a symbiotic relationship with the protozoan. They photosynthesise inside the protozoan, providing it with sugars and oxygen, while deriving protection from their host. | |
