Concentration and chemical reactions. Animation showing the effect of concentration on collision frequency between molecules, an example of the collision theory of chemical reactions. The animation starts with two boxes of equal volume containing gas or liquid molecules. The box at left has the molecules at a lower concentration than the box at right. The number of collisions (shown at bottom in each box) is recorded over a period of 15 seconds (timer at top centre). The rate of collisions is approximately four times as fast in the box at a higher concentration, leading to a faster reaction rate. Collision theory is closely related to reaction kinetics. For similar animations showing the effects of temperature and surface area on collision frequency, see clips K005/4852 and K005/4858. | |
