Fermentation experiment. Animation 4 of 4, showing the later stages in an experiment to show that anaerobic fermentation produces carbon dioxide gas. This animation shows a yeast-glucose mixture being heated in a water bath, and the carbon dioxide gas produced being identified by being bubbled through lime water (a solution of calcium hydroxide). The lime water turns cloudy as the carbon dioxide reacts with the calcium hydroxide to form the insoluble precipitate calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Yeast fermentation is used in the production of foods and beverages such as bread and beer. For the four parts of this animation, see clips K005/4534, K005/4531, K005/4533 and K005/4532. For the unlabelled version of this animation, see clip K005/4870. | |
