Coloured scanning electron microscopy of the hairs on the wall of the trap of a pitcher plant (Sarracenia sp.). This plant attracts insects to jug-shaped traps with a sweet smell. The inner walls are extremely slippery, however, and the insects easily fall into the trap. These downward-pointing hairs prevent the insect being able to climb out. The trap contains a soup of digestive enzymes, which break down the insect, liberating nutrients for the plant. | |
