Drifting ocean garbage, global simulation. This animation shows data from scientific buoys and a simulation of rubbish in the world's oceans. The first 30 seconds shows floating scientific buoys (white dots) over a period of around 35 years. The data is then adjusted to show the buoy starting points (from 00:30 to 00:40 seconds), with lines showing ships and planes that released buoys periodically. The simulation then looks at all the buoys simultaneously (00:40 to 00:50 seconds). The buoys accumulate into patches (brown, 00:50 to 00:60 seconds). These are the five known gyres in the world's oceans, also known as ocean garbage patches. The last 30 seconds of the simulation shows a computational model of ocean currents called ECCO-2, with the same result: the formation of five ocean garbage patches. The ocean buoy data is from the Global Drifter Database (1979 to 2013) maintained by NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory.
