Ozone formation mechanism, animation. Ultraviolet radiation from the Sun impacting the Earth's atmosphere creates new molecules such as ozone (O3). This occurs during the day when the ultraviolet light destroys oxygen (red, O2) and nitrogen (blue, N2) molecules, triggering a chain of complex chemical reactions. The resulting ozone layer protects life on Earth from dangerous levels of ultraviolet radiation, reducing the amount that reaches the surface. This animated video clip is from the European Southern Observatory (ESO)'s ESOcast. Animation published in 2015. |
