Chemiluminescence mechanism, animation. Ultraviolet radiation from the Sun impacting the Earth's atmosphere causes a phenomenon known as chemiluminescence (green glow). During the day, the ultraviolet light destroys oxygen (red, O2) and nitrogen (blue, N2) molecules, triggering a chain of complex chemical reactions and creating new molecules. During the night, some of these molecules take part in further reactions and collisions, causing them to radiate light. This process is known as chemiluminescence. This animated video clip is from the European Southern Observatory (ESO)'s ESOcast. Animation published in 2015. |
