Mosquito larva siphon. Light microscope footage of the tip of the siphon (breathing tube) of a mosquito larva (family Culicidae). Mosquito larvae are aquatic and breathe through spiracles located on their abdomen, or through a siphon located on the end of the abdomen. Air from above the water surface (left) is conducted through the siphon to a respiratory system of tracheal tubes. These vessels permeate the tissues allowing diffusion of oxygen, carbon dioxide and water. | |
