Mosquito larva siphons. Light microscope footage of the siphons (breathing tubes) of two mosquito larvae (family Culicidae). The camera pans along the length of one of the larvae, revealing internal structures of its abdominal segments, its thorax and its head. Mosquito larvae are aquatic and breathe through spiracles located on their abdomen, or through a siphon located on the end of the abdomen as seen here. Air from above the water surface (left) is conducted through the siphon to a respiratory system of tracheal tubes. These vessels permeate the tissues allowing diffusion of oxygen, carbon dioxide and water. | |
