Anal gills and abdomen of a mosquito larva. Light microscope footage of the anal gills (pointed structures) and abdomen (left) of a mosquito larva. The focus shifts from the anal gills to the internal structures of the abdominal segments in the foreground. Mosquito larvae are aquatic and breathe through spiracles located on their abdomen, or through a siphon (breathing tube) on the end of their body. The anal gills are structures found on the anal segment at the end of the abdomen, and arise from a thin membrane around the anus. They are thought to be involved in osmoregulation, the maintenance of correct concentration of fluids and electrolytes. | |
